The World Has Got the Wrong Idea About Fashion Month

The Real Reason We Love Fashion Month

Anyone with a wifi and an Instagram account could take a guess at why fashion girls clear their schedules and flock from city to city for Fashion Month. Could it be the glitzy after-parties? The bright lights of the street style photographers? The loud thumps of the music queuing up to signal the start of the show?

Personally, I don't think it is any of these. I think, what it all really boils down to is the freedom.

If you scroll through the photos from this year's New York Fashion Week, you will notice something rather peculiar. The photos start off with fashion-girls dressed in funky pants with oversized button downs and seamlessly transition to bloggers in billowy blouses paired with luxe shorts. Then, just when you think you've got it all figured out, here comes an editor in a mountain of fluffy fur.

So how can all of these looks possibly work together to create the most posh events of the year? How can you have shorts, suede, crop tops and fur all mixed together? Surely someone has to be right and someone else wrong, no? No. That's the magic of Fashion Week. The freedom to not only escape from dressing for your day-to-day activities, but also the freedom to dress for either the season you are in or the season you wish it were. In a sense, every time you step out of your car and onto the pavement you get transported into another world -- a fashion world. And there's only one rule here: No matter what you choose to wear, OWN IT!
